The Importance of Air Duct Cleaning

Protecting our environment - protecting the planet Earth - is on everyone's mind. We all do what we can, whether it's finding alternative means of transportation to lower air pollution or recycling our newspapers or changing our light bulbs to lower-energy bulbs.

But when was the last time you thought about your indoor environment? Keeping the passages that deliver air to and from your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is very important.

The effectiveness of air duct cleaning

If you check the research regarding the effect of duct cleaning on your indoor environment, you will find conflicting information and as yet, inconclusive results. While most researchers agree that cleaning your furnace or air conditioning duct in order to improve air quality is not absolutely necessary, they also agree that there is a correlation between neglected duct work and a grab-bag of medical issues ranging from headaches and dizziness to asthma and allergy attacks. Common sense also tells us that if the passageways that deliver air into our living or working space are dirty, the air that they deliver may carry traces of whatever is lurking inside those passageways. Current industry standards dictate thorough duct cleaning at least once every 5 to 7 years.

The process

When an air duct cleaning service arrives on the premises the first thing they need to do is to conduct a visual inspection of the visible parts of the furnace, air conditioner, dryer vent, etc. They are on the look-out for dirt and debris, excessive dust build-up, rodent hair or droppings, or discoloration, which may indicate mold. They will also make note of any excessive signs of moisture. While some condensation is normal, too much water could indicate faulty seals, a leak or some other malfunction. Disproportionate moisture within the duct work is a sure indication that other problems will follow.

The cleaning process actually begins with protecting the homeowners' furniture, carpeting and possessions. Once this is done, technicians will access the inner duct work to rid it of all pollutants - dust, debris, pollen, etc. You might be surprised to know that duct work is often littered with other debris. This is removed with powerful vacuum cleaners.

Essential to effective vent duct cleaning and air duct cleaning is the use of high-powered, HEPA (high efficiency particle air) vacuum cleaners. This type of vacuum limits the amount of dust particles that are released into the air. Gentle scrubbing tools are sent down each duct to remove all traces of litter. It is at this point that some companies offer sanitizing services, mold prevention services and other optional services.

Once the insides of the HVAC system are clean, the work is only half done. The blower fan, a/c coil, vents, diffusers, grilles, registers and more all need to be cleaned, and reset or reinstalled as necessary.
