Cleaning your indoor air ducts and vents should be done regularly. Unable to do so can incur unhealthy possibilities for you and your companions within the household. Breathing in air that is riddled with dust, pollen, mold, and other pollutants may cause harm to people and appliances. People with allergies and illnesses like asthma will find their sickness worsen. Appliances will then need to work harder because of the added stress in their machinery (which means a larger electricity bill).
Here are steps on how to clean your indoor air ducts by yourself:
1. Prepare the tools
A cleaning job can't be finished if it is not started properly. Prepare cleaning utensils like a cleaning bucket filled with water, a rag (or a mop), a vacuum cleaner (if there is one nearby), a flashlight (because it can be dark inside the ducts), and a mold removal spray (just in case). Remember to place these items within reach for a faster work output.
2. Locating the air ducts
This step is pretty much obvious since it is what you are going to clean. Just remember that some houses have air ducts that are not readily visible so you may have to do a bit of searching first.
3. Take off the covering
Ducts and vents have different type of covers. Some can be removed just by levering it off while others need their screws taken off first.
4. Get a stepladder if the vent is out of reach
Harsh reality alert! Do not try reaching your air ducts for them to be cleaned if you are not tall enough. If you do so, then the ducts and vents may not be thoroughly cleaned and it may cause some injury (and arm cramps). So get a stepladder first to make things easier.
5. Vacuuming the insides
Once you have a clear view of the filthy air passageway, and if you have a vacuum cleaner nearby, use its nozzle to remove loose dust, particles, mold, etc. that have already built up in the air corridor.
6. Use the rag with detergent
After vacuuming, use a rag with a warm water-detergent mix. If it is really dark, use the flashlight to see inside. If there are mold present, wipe them down with vinegar as it will do the trick.
7. Put the cover back on
Self explanatory.
8. Contact professionals
